Out of the 219 teen schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram from Nigeria’s Chibok region, one has been recovered by activists after more than two years of her abduction.
In April 2014, the group of girls was abducted and now the activists in Nigeria have found one of them. According to The Independent, the girl has been recovered by the Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilant troop formed to assist in dealing with the extremists. The girl has been identified as Amina Ali Darsha. A relative confirmed that she has been found with a four-month-old on Tuesday in the Sambisa Forest, the place from where the girls went missing. From there, she has been brought back home to Mbalala, Chibok.
Yakubu Nkeki, Abducted Chibok Girls Parents group head, said that the teen was 17 when she was kidnapped. He confirmed that the teen has now reunited with her mother. “When her mother approached the car, the girl stepped out and her mother exclaimed, ‘Amina! Is that you?’” a local community leader, Ayuba Alamson Chibok, said as quoted by the ABC. “They ran towards each other and hugged. The mother burst into tears.”
The girls’ abduction sparked an international reaction from people worldwide. The public united for a cause and pushed for the investigation that brought about the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
The vigilant group also detained a Boko Haram terror suspect named Mohammed Hayatu, who claimed the recovered girl was his wife. “Preliminary investigation shows that she is indeed one of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on 14th April 2014 in Chibok,” army spokesman Sani Usman said in a statement.
The #BringBackOurGirls activists confirmed the release of Ali. “She says all of the others are still in the Sambisa Forest area. That they are heavily guarded,” the group said.
Haram militants raided a school in midnight that time and more than 200 girls were abducted. They were forced to get into the trucks and were driven into the forest in 2014.
