A local self-defence group in Cameroon killed a 40-year-old woman with a poisoned arrow moments before she was about to blow herself up. The would-be suicide bomber had explosives strapped to her body which she had intended to detonate.
According to Midjiyawa Bakary, the governor of Cameroon’s Far North region, the woman crossed over from Nigeria along with a 14-year-old girl. The residents shot her with the arrow when the woman refused to stop as demanded. Her companion, the teenager, also died after she blew herself up with explosives, the New York Post reported.
According to a report by Mail Online, the attack was reported shortly before Paul Biya, Cameroon’s president, headed to Nigeria to discuss ways to stop violence by Boko Haram with his Nigerian counterpart.
The local governments have allowed self-defense groups at the Cameroon-Nigeria border to guard and protect themselves against the Boko Haram violence. The group has been given the power to question travellers, denounce to military anyone they feel suspicious about and also carry out intelligence-gathering missions.
The terrorist group abducts young girls to treat as sex slaves and later turns them into suicide bombers to carry out the missions of the struggling terrorist organisation. According to the army, the girls used as sex slaves are more vulnerable and are less prone to being suspected.
“The goal now is to stop Boko Haram incursions into villages, stop them from planting IEDs (home-made bombs), and stop suicide bombings,” Mail Online quoted Lieutenant-Colonel Felix Tetcha, a senior officer in the army’s operation against Boko Haram, as saying.
A regional offensive last year took away most of the territories that used to be the terror group’s strongholds.
Cameroon is the worst affected by the violence inflicted by Boko Haram outside Kenya, where it is seeking to establish an Islamist emirate. The locals near the northern town of Mora said that in the last few days, five more suicide bombers have died.
